Art Exhibits
The Library is home to several permanent works of art. "The Garden Party," by Harvey Dunn, a major American illustrator who painted in Tenafly from 1919 to 1952, hangs on permanent display near the entrance of the Library. The painting was a gift to the Borough from Harvey Dunn’s estate, and it is housed in a beautiful frame made possible by a gift from Dr. Robin Motz in memory of his wife, Janice Stein Motz.
"My Tenafly Bookcase," painted by Alice Renner Rigney, was a gift of the Tenafly High School Class of 1946. The trompe l’oeil mural, located behind the circulation desk, features books written by Tenafly authors and titles about Tenafly and its history. It also includes some three-dimensional items, such as the pen and inkwell that illustrator George Price, a former Tenafly resident, used to draw his cartoons for The New Yorker.
At the entrance to the Edna Kawulitzki Room, on each side, stand the exquisite stained glass panel windows "The Tree of Knowledge" and "The Tree of Life," created by stained glass designer Katherine Lamb Tait (1895-1981) of the famed J. & R. Lamb Studios, formerly of Tenafly. "The Tree of Life" is in memory of Mrs. R. Leonard Hooven, formerly a member of the Library Board of Trustees.
Be sure to view the Tenafly Centennial Photocollage (1996) by Tenafly photographer Gordon D. Rapp. It hangs at the Library’s entrance.
Tenafly artist Boonja Choi has donated "Between Light and Light," an acrylic painting, in honor of Changin Chung. It is on permanent exhibit in the Reference Room.
In addition, the Edna Kawulitzki Room houses ever-changing exhibits of artwork presented by The Art Committee of the Tenafly Public library. Exhibits usually extend for two months.
