Book selection is always a very personal thing.  There is no one book perfect for every child, but on this page you will find books which our staff and librarians recommend and links to pages which we trust to have good recommendations.

Sites to explore:

  • Read, Watch, Listen - a Reader's Guide Website maintained by BCCLS library system.  There are many lists for all ages divided by category and all linked to the BCCLS online catalog for easy click and request options.

  • NYPL's List of 100 Children's Books - New York Public Library's whole site is worth exploring, but this is our favorite list on this Children's Section.  It does evolve and change so even if you've browsed before, feel free to visit again.

  • Caldecott Medal - It is important to note this award is given for the ART.  Caldecott winners are among the most beautiful pictures books out there, but range widely in their target age range.

  • Newbery Medal - The Newbery Medal is given to the author of a book published for children (defined as persons up to age 14) and in recognition of their distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

  • Pura Belpré Award - This award is presented to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.
